SENTINARYO BALIKTANAW SA ARKITEKTURA NG NAKARAAN
The date was February 23, 1921, a historic day for Filipino architects. It was the day that the Senate and House of Representatives enacted Act No. 2985, otherwise known as the “Engineering and Architecture Law”. It was the very first time that the architecture profession was institutionalized, when the Secretary of Commerce and Communications, in lieu of the Act, was tasked to appoint a board of examiners for each of the professions of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and more importantly, Architecture.
Almost 30 years after, on June 17, 1950, the Act to Regulate the Practice of Architecture in the Philippines was approved into a law by virtue of Republic Act No. 545. More than 50 years then, it was repealed by Republic Act No. 9266, otherwise known as “The Architecture Act of 2004” on March 17 of the same year.
Today, after a century of the profession, one can truly testify as to how much we architects, have progressed. From being limited to just being a Maestro de Obra, with no architecture school available back then, to a more than 50,000 strong professionals today.
And as the number of professionals grow, so is their contribution to the society, to communities, to the built environment. As we mark the architecture profession’s 100th year in the country this 2021, the United Architects of the Philippines – Makati CBD Chapter invites all members to an afternoon or reflection as to how architecture has molded the Filipino people and its culture throughout the years, and how it will continue to be part of our lives for the years to come.
